travel republic of ireland glendalough the round tower
Glendalough, meaning "Valley of two lakes," is a Early Medieval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century in glacial valley in County Wicklow, Ireland.
The Round Tower in Glendalough is 30 meters high with a conical roof rebuilt in 1876.
The tower originally had six timber floors connected by ladders, and the entrance is 3.5 meters above the ground.
Each of the four floors above the entrance had a small window and the top storey has four windows facing the compass points.
It is thought that the tower served as a landmark but also served as a store house and as a place of refuge in times of attack.
It is amazing to see this simple beautiful tower in such a good state of preservation.
